The title might give allusions to a vacation, which is something that might, to some degree, be true. However, the real goal behind this post is to tell the world that I am moving to London. The reason is, unsurprisingly, for school. All my life I have wanted to study abroad, and this year is the year it is finally happening. Ah, it is very exciting!

I have never made any New Year’s resolutions. Ever. Yes, it is a new year and people set goals, but what stops them from setting goals at any other time? New Year’s resolutions are usually of the extreme degree and most people are unable to uphold them. So why bother? I have always had a different solution. Instead of swearing off candy for an entire year, I say on any given monday: “If I stick to my plan and get everything done this week, I will enjoy saturday with a glass of merlot and a Will & Grace marathon.” Or, I will go out with my friends. Short term goals make the carrot on the stick seem so much closer. And that’s because it is!

By setting yourself weekly and monthly goals with a small prize at the end, you do not have to worry about breaking down after two months and living an unhealthy life for the next ten months until new goals and resolutions are made. Instead, eat a hamburger once in a while and you might crave strawberries instead. I have always been taught “everything in moderation” – does this not also apply to resolutions? I believe so.

As I mentioned, I have never set myself yearly goals. Even so, I have so much great things to note about last year. In 2013 I…

  1. started drinking water because I figured out a way to do it without having to pee ALL THE TIME. The trick is to start the day with half a liter and end the day with half a liter – I am not certain why, but it works.
  2. realised exercise is good. This year I have not done any exercise at all, and even though my body looks the same, I get exhausted by doing nothing. I also feel like my back is crooked after writing too many papers and exams. So, exercise! I am starting yoga and pilates and could not be more excited!
  3. understood that I am eating healthy. If I cut out the splash of milk I put in my (one) cup of coffee each day, switch my usual pasta with polenta or quinoa, I am following an alkaline diet! I will not go vegan or vegetarian, but I will try to minimise the amount of dairy and wheat products I eat. As my diet already consists of almost only veggies and fruit, why not try and cut out the rest as a conscious choice?
  4. learned A LOT! Studying at university has learned me so much, not only theoretically about philosophers, writers and politics, but also about how life works and about myself as a person.
  5. think I have realised what I want to be when I am grown up. I have always wanted to be a journalist, but 2013 really made me realise that it is a real and accomplishable goal.
  6. lived in France! Albeit only for about a month, my stay in Caen will forever stay in my mind. A different people, a different climate and a different culture really made me realise that I am a true Norwegian.
  7. have not missed owning a television. Whenever I go home I am so annoyed by my family’s consistent need for the television to be on. There are so many mindless and meaningless shows on! How do people make all this stupid stuff? And WHY do people watch it? No, I will never own a TV (unless used as a screen for my PC). I like my select series and I will stick to them.

I am sure there are many more things I could have listed, but the point is not what I have accomplished. The point is that you can accomplish your goals without writing them down or making them at the beginning of january! By living and learning, you usually understand why things need to be a certain way; why it is good for you to exercise and eat healthy. Try eating unhealthy and see what it does to you. If you do not like it, then I am sure the motivation to get fit and sign yourself up for a yoga class will be so much greater than if you only did it because it is what is expected of you. So go on! Live, learn and do what is right. Happy new year!

Paris, because Paris will forever be in my heart.

Coffee, because when I was thirteen I watched Gilmore Girls and decided I wanted to be Lorelai and Rory. And a coffee addiction is a side effect of that goal. Today I get a headache if I don’t drink it. And I haven’t exercised in two years. Yey, I reached my goal?

Balenciaga cut-out ankle boots. Because they are perfect. And I can never afford them. #SadLife

I don’t know if I want to live there, but the house is pretty. Though I believe the windows are too large for me. Everyone would see me naked if I lived there.

Ellie Saab and his gorgeous dresses. I want one! (or more than one)

The Delevingne sisters have risen to fame and are now a couple of the most talked about sisters out there. I cannot remember a time not knowing who they were, though I’m certain that time has existed. I know I knew of Poppy before Cara. And though Cara is all the rage right at this moment, I’m more fascinated by her older sister. Poppy is a jetsetter and a rich girl – I imagine her a real-life Serena van der Woodsen. She employs a tasteful and simple palette, that coupled with perfect fit and the occasional sartorial surprise makes me carefully track her style evolution.  A source of inspiration, that she is.

I know I’m not alone when I say shoes are my passion. Heels, flats, furry or leather – I adore them all. Unfortunately, I not only live in the coldest country possible, I also live on a student budget. Hence, not many new shoes are brought into my home yearly. Occasionally though, I do splurge. And an item on my wishlist this fall (or winter, should I say?), is flat, black ankle boots. They’re a must-have in all wardrobes and the shame of not already owning a pair is quite pressing. Even though I most certainly will not be the only girl in black ankle boots, I do need a pair. Why? Because they’re the perfect combination of dressy and casual. You can wear them to school with jeans or you can pair them with a fluffy dress and attend a birthday party. Versatility is a must in these times of university life.

Here are some inspirational photos:

Today I overheard someone discussing an article I wrote. The fact that I have been writing for the student newspaper for almost a year now probably should have made it less shocking than it was. Still, I never really imagined students actually reading my articles. Firstly, a survey has shown that though most students are aware of the paper and grab a copy every now and then, they don’t normally read through it. Secondly, I write for the culture section, which is the last section of the paper.

However, as I find the culture section to be most pleasing, maybe there are others out there who do too. But how can I know? What I do know, is that the imagined scenario of a group of friends discussing something I put down on paper, is quite extraordinary. This is why I write.

(And let’s forget that the article in question was  centered around child stars, and in particular, Miley Cyrus.)

Aren’t Fridays the best? You wake up and know that you can stay up as late as you want, because tomorrow is Saturday and no problems arise by sleeping away the entire day. You can drink coffee at six because you know you won’t want to go to bed before many more hours have past. You can attend class and be content with not listening to what the lecturer is babbling on about. Why? Because it’s friday! How can school expect you to uphold concentration during the weekend?! Why even ARE there classes on a Friday?

In my experience, Friday classes are for tumbling. This inability to let my sponge of a brain absorb anything other than tequila and pretty things is quite compatible with tumblr. Therefore, I hereby instate “tumblr saturday”. What does this imply, you ask? Well, it’s simple. I show you what I tumbled yesterday!

… Let the games begin.

1. A man in with a rabbit head. Honestly, I think it was the abs that convinced me to post this. Additionally, it might have been the very inventive pun of a man as a sex toy. You choose.

2. Look! It’s a baby giraffe! No explanation needed.

3. I posted this photo on tumblr after finding it on the website of british Vogue. Why? The matching pyjamas and headboard.

5. This is what I wished I looked like on the first day of high school. Don’t judge. I would have been the coolest kid if I could have done it over again now.

6. Michaela Bercu by Peter Lindbergh for Vogue November 1988, Anna Wintor’s first issue of Vogue. This is what she said:

It was so unlike the studied and elegant close-ups that were typical of Vogue’s covers back then, with tons of makeup and major jewelry. This one broke all the rules. Michaela wasn’t looking at you, and worse, she had her eyes almost closed. Her hair was blowing across her face. It looked easy, casual, a moment that had been snapped on the street, which it had been, and which was the whole point. Afterwards, in the way that these things can happen, people applied all sorts of interpretations: It was about mixing high and low, Michaela was pregnant, it was a religious statement. But none of these things was true. I had just looked at that picture and sensed the winds of change. And you can’t ask for more from a cover image than that” (The Coveteur).

7. Because sometimes, people just talk bullshit. Because sometimes, people’s thoughts are just bullshit. Because sometimes, life seems like bullshit.

8. Billie Holiday, because I always listen to jazz when cooking really great dinners.

9. Poppy Delevingne, because her style is flawless. She reminds me of a real-life Serena van der Woodsen.

10. Finally, Carrie Bradshaw. She holds the key to all my sexually related questions. Also, she is my journalistic inspiration. Someday, I want to be her. Okay, not literally be her, but be like her. Not in the fact that I’m more a Samantha, Miranda or Charlotte. No, I just wish to be celebrated for asking the right questions and sharing my thoughts to the world. Be it sex or democracy.

Until next time, tumble on!
